Everyday Work Suppose you have a person in your work life who drives you crazy, and you don’t quite know how to handle this. You are learning the teachings of A Course in Miracles (ACIM) and you now realize that you are the problem, not them! This idea is driving you crazy because any sane person can see that they are acting like an ass, and you aren’t! At least, not around them! ACIM indicates, however, that you do in fact act this way somewhere in your life but you are either denying or avoiding this point. So now you feel stuck, and you do want to find a solution, but how?
We have a tendency to want to separate the different areas of our life – personal, spiritual, professional, romantic, financial, and so on – but A Course in Miracles does not teach us to do that; it poses that all obstacles are lessons that Love would have us learn.
From the perspective of A Course in Miracles your whole life is your “workbook,” and every relationship and each encounter is an opportunity to practice the healing from your belief in separation. The practice of healing from the belief in separation is a process that ACIM calls forgiveness work. A Course in Miracles teaches you that everything, other than love and truth, stems from the desire to be separate or, in ACIM terms, the desire to be “special.”
Because we spend so much of our day with co-workers, inevitably encountering some people who rub us the wrong way, and we are apt to want to judge, criticize and separate from them, practicing forgiveness at work is key.
If we look honestly, we will recognize the many ways we hurt and attack one another at work, either verbally or mentally through nasty comments, gossip, withholding and the forcing of our values and unexpressed expectations onto others.
So, A Course in Miracle’s daily practice of thoughts and attitudes is necessary at work, as well as in every area of our life. If we truly hope to gain deeper feelings of joy, fulfillment, peace and gratitude, then it is with our colleagues, clients, managers, students and peers that we need to begin. In fact, we can only measure our success each day by encountering an old situation that used to make us feel nuts and see how differently we feel through applying A Course in Miracle’s principles – the principles of love and truth.
